How to Naturally Treat Your Sunburn
As we’re right in the heat of Summer, literally, it’s important to think about protecting our skin and keeping it as healthy as possible. The sun’s UV rays can be harmful to our skin causing sunburns, skin damage, and even cancer. That’s why it’s so important to use sunscreen and avoid being directly in the sun for long periods of time. But every now and then we get the dreaded sunburn causing pain, irritation, and embarrassing red skin! Being able to naturally treat your sunburn can speed up the healing process and ensure a safe approach to alleviating skin irritation.
Here are our tips on how to naturally treat your sunburn.
Minimize Sun Exposure
Of course, the best plan of action for sunburns is preventing sun exposure whenever possible. No, that doesn’t mean you need to spend all of your time indoors. It simply means minimizing sun exposure whenever possible. This could include wearing a hat, clothing with SPF protection, or sunscreen. Wearing sunscreen, daily is important in preventing sunburns especially when you’ll be out in the sun for long periods of time. Don’t forget to reapply!
Hydrate and Cool Down
After coming in from the sun, your sunburn will start to set in. When the skin is burned it soaks up fluids in your body, making you dehydrated, so be sure you’re drinking lots of water before, during, and after sun exposure. Once you’re out of the sun, start hydrating and cooling down. Take extra measures to cool your body down by running a fan or taking a quick, cold shower. A sunburn is an inflammatory reaction to the sun’s UV rays so treat it like any other red, irritated skin and be gentle.
Soothe Skin
After a few hours of being inside from the sun, your sunburnt skin may sting or feel sore. This is when some skin-soothing ingredients will be especially helpful to naturally treat your sunburn. Aloe Vera can be pretty effective, but there are plenty of other additional products to help you treat your sunburn.
Aloe Vera
It’s no secret that aloe vera helps treats sunburns, but we’re here to say it again! Aloe vera can be found in stores, typically next to the sunscreen, but a an even better, natural solution is to keep an aloe plant handy. Aloe vera has cooling and hydrating properties and contains aloin, an anti-inflammatory compound.
Lavender
Lavender has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties that aide in the sunburn’s healing process and is a great way to naturally treat your sunburn.
Chamomile
Chamomile does more than just aide in sleep and relaxation. It has an abundance of antioxidants that allow it to restore and soothe skin and can heal everything from sunburns to bruises.
Calendula
Coming from the yellow Marigold flowers, calendula is rich in antioxidants and soothes damaged, irritated skin. It’s especially gentle on sensitive skin making it suitable for a variety of skin conditions.
Green Tea
Green tea is especially high in tannic acid and theobromine which can help soothe and quicken the healing process of irritated or damaged skin.
Hydrate Peeling Skin
Finally, your sunburnt skin may start to peel. It’s important to try not to pick at or exfoliate the peeling skin as this can irritate the sunburn even more, slowing down the healing process. Instead, focus on treating it with some topical anti-inflammatory and hydrating products. Once again, aloe vera makes a great choice, but a gentle moisturizer is also fantastic for a sunburn.
We take sun protection seriously. Reducing UV exposure on your skin is incredibly important, yet despite our best efforts to prevent it, sunburns still happen. Sometimes we don’t use enough sunscreen, and sometimes we completely forget about it, but knowing how to naturally treat your sunburn can help hydrate and relieve your irritated skin with gentle ingredients.
