The Difference Between Organic and Chemical-Based Skin Care

The Difference Between Organic and Chemical-Based Skin Care

As more research has emerged on the benefits of organic, all-natural skin care, it’s important for consumers to be aware of the difference between organic and chemical-based skin care. Organic skin care and other personal care products are naturally derived without any genetic modifications or added substances. Several regulatory organizations certify the authenticity of organic products. Chemical-based personal care products can contain synthetically altered ingredients that are potentially harmful to the human body and the environment. Consumer rights groups are continuing to research the harmful effects of these ingredients and advocate for the federal government to ban them.

100 Percent Purely, Naturally Derived Organic Products

Organic skin care products are made with ingredients that are fully naturally-derived — typically from plants, fruits, and vegetables. They are made without pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, chemicals, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), toxins, and additives. Organic skin care products are made with naturally occurring vitamins, enzymes, and nutrients, which clean and nourish skin in the gentlest way possible.

“Organic skin care is skin care that only contains organically certified ingredients,” says Linda Fanaras, founder of the organic skin care company Éclatant Botanicals. “These ingredients are produced without pesticides or chemicals making them organic from the start.”

In creating Éclatant Botanicals, Fanaras sought out the finest, purest ingredients in the world. All Éclatant Botanicals products are made with high-quality, 100 percent organic and all-natural ingredients including golden jojoba oil, rosehip oil and babassu oil, which come from all over the globe.

Regulation and Certifications

Fanaras advises that not all organic products are made equally. Some companies may claim that they use all natural or organic ingredients but that’s not always the case. To regulate these claims, there are several organizations tasked with certifying products as organic or not.

First and foremost is the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). There are four levels of organic certification from the USDA: 100 Percent Organic, meaning that all ingredients are organically produced; Organic, meaning that 95 percent of the ingredients are organically produced; Made with Organic Ingredients, meaning the product contains at least 70 percent of organically produced ingredients; and Specific Organic Ingredient Listings, which means that the company cannot use the term organic on the packaging but may list organically produced items. Those labeled as Made with Organic Ingredients and Specific Organic Ingredient Listings are not allowed to display the USDA Organic seal on their packaging while products labeled as Organic and 100 Percent Organic can display the seal.

Beauty retailer Sephora has created their own organic certification seal called Clean at Sephora as well as a separate section on their website for products with this distinction. The website explains that products with their certification do not contain “parabens, sulfates SLS and SLES, phthalates, mineral oils, formaldehydes, and more.”

In addition, a team of scientists at personal care company, Burt’s Bees, have worked to create international guidelines (ISO 16128) for natural and organic cosmetic products for the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

Negative Effects of Chemical-Based Beauty Products

Chemical-based beauty products may contain synthetic substances such as parabens, sulfates, formaldehyde, phthalates, petrochemicals, and artificial colors.

The Environmental Working Group, a research and advocacy organization for consumer goods, published an article on the hazards of parabens and what is being done to reduce their use. The article lists four main types of parabens that studies have found to be health hazards: isobutylparabens, butylparabens, isopropylparabens, and propylparabens.

Parabens are preservatives used to prevent the formation of bacteria in beauty products. They have been found to negatively affect hormones and the reproductive system, cause skin irritation, increase the risk of skin cancer, and can kill coral. Many retailers are now banning or greatly reducing the sale of products with parabens. Countries in Europe and Asia have already banned parabens.

Studies have also found that sulfates, detergents found in personal care cleansers, and phthalates, chemicals found in fragrances and plastics, have been linked to cancer. Sulfates are also known to cause skin irritation.

Using the skin care products created by Mother Nature instead of using chemically altered ingredients will leave your skin fresh, soft, and glowing. Your body and the environment will thank you too.
